What is a DIAL rating and do I need one?

Data Impact Assurance Level (DIAL) is a concept introduced as part of the ADISA IT Asset Recovery Standard 8.0. It allows data controllers to assess and communicate the risk level of their data. This helps data processors create a service plan that matches the specific needs of the data controller. The DIAL rating system isn’t just about meeting standards. It helps businesses measure the security and disposal methods of IT Asset Disposal service providers. Providers with a high DIAL rating are recognised for their strong security measures in handling IT asset disposal.

DIAL Ratings Explained

DIAL ratings range from 1-3. A higher number means a higher risk level, guiding businesses on how securely they need to handle their data. Data centres, pharmaceutical companies, and government agencies often get a DIAL rating of 3. This means they must follow the strictest data security and disposal rules to protect very sensitive information.
